In Hobart, there is a pub called Tom McHugos. It’s a sort of gastro pub. I say sort of because it is still very much a standard pub in the looks department. No expensive furniture or fittings or fancy table settings. It’s an order-at-the-bar type of place. And while a chicken parmi1 is very much a menu staple, it also prides itself on its innovative dishes made with local produce at an amazingly reasonable price. Almost since the beginning, Brewers Malt Pie has been on the menu and is something that I order every time I go. It is smooth, with an intense malt flavour, which, if you have a love of malt, is almost addictive.2
