There was quite a bit of excitement in The Valley late last year when the prestigious Condé Nast Travelers named the Huon Valley as one of the best places in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific to visit in 2024. It was as if we had finally arrived. We’re quite used to playing second fiddle to other Tasmanian locations. Most first-time visitors to Tasmania travel a well-worn route, a seven or 14-day itinerary that touches on the better-known locations. Visitors arrive in Hobart, travel to Port Arthur, Freycinet National Park, perhaps up the east coast, and then north to Launceston, over to Cradle Mountain, and west to Strahan to take the boat trip on Macquarie Harbour. A trip to the Huon Valley usually comes on subsequent visits, tourists looking for somewhere a little further afield.
