In the scheme of world geography, Australia is a long way from anywhere, Tasmania even further, and the far south of Tasmania still further. Travelling here from the other side of the world requires some dedication and acceptance that, depending on where you started, will probably take more than a day and several flights before you get here. Combine distance with a relatively minuscule population, and Tasmania is rarely on the list of destinations for visiting artists, grand theatre productions or rare museum displays. So it’s always exciting when someone of note makes an effort to venture as far as Hobart, and even more exciting when they go a step further and decide that the far south is not only worth visiting but a great place to hold a cooking class!
I’m not suggesting that
is widely famous to the general population, but for food and cookbook lovers, she is a well-known name, and for her to travel from Tuscany to Franklin (not Hobart, but tiny Franklin, just down the road from us!) was quite a thrill. It probably helps that Emiko has family in Australia; the ability to combine a work trip with visiting family is a great incentive. It also helps that Michelle Crawford’s Bowmont is a gorgeous venue.
