three things... vintage baking, condensed milk and dinner parties
and other interesting food snippets
An update - the kitchen, the garden, and three (mostly) food-related snippets I’ve discovered.
We were away last week - in Brisbane for my mother’s 80th birthday celebrations. They have had a relentlessly humid summer, more so than usual. Everyone seemed to walk around with a permanent sheen of sweat and lank hair. No product is capable of defying the constant dampness in the air. The air conditioners struggle, and in the morning, there is a steady drip of condensation falling from the outlet. Walking onto the tarmac at Hobart airport was such a relief - mild temperatures and a cool breeze - bliss! The upside of the rain and humidity in Brisbane is that everywhere is lush and verdant and gloriously tropical. You can almost imagine requiring a machete to slash your way through the vegetation. In contrast, home is brown and crispy, not unusual at this time of year but much more obvious after Brisbane. Despite the dry conditions, the finger-sized zucchini grew to gigantic proportions in the few days we were away. As did the beans, and there are plenty of tomatoes that need to be incorporated into each and every meal and in between snacks. I’ve picked up five kilos of Robe de Sergeant plums from a neighbour. These are a prune plum, so I’m planning on drying some and jamming others. And the blackberries, and the tomatillos. It’s a busy time…
Have a great weekend.
