I also absolutely detest mushrooms and squeaked with joy when I read you do too. Nice to hear you can create great veggie food without them!

They are a childhood dislike that I never grew out of!

Well I was a genuine hippie, even living in the Haight Ashbury in San Francisco for a time and baking bread from the Tassajara Bread Book. But I have never heard of this pie, nor seen a recipe until you posted it. It sounds healthy and delicious.

What a great place to be a hippy, I loved Haight Ashbury when we visited quite a few years ago now. I don’t know the Tassajara Bread Book - I’m going to look it up. I think the homity pie is very English, but really well worth making.

The Tassajara Bread Book was a classic in its time. It was what got me into baking bread, but there were also pancakes, banana bread and all manner of muffins, often using different types of flours, whole grains, seeds and ingredients that were new to me and plenty of others in those days—like millet, carob and barley flour. It had a big influence on a lot of folks in the budding health and organic food movements in the ‘70s and beyond. I just dug up my battered copy of the 25th anniversary edition (I lost the original long ago). The line drawings are still so compelling. I think I’m going to bake something! Thanks for the inspiration, Julia!

Sounds like my sort of book. I’m definitely going to see if I can track it down.

Maybe I'm just a crusty hippy, but I love the idea of toasted oats in pastry 🙌

Maybe we’re both crusty hippies at heart because toasted oats in pastry are brilliant!

I lived in the UK in the mid 80s - and as a vegetarian, I relied on the Cranks and Moosewood cookbooks. There was some delicious food in them, but so much cheese!!! I do love homity pie though :) Thanks for the recipe.

The Moosewood cookbook was the vegetarian bible! And cheese was definitely the fallback ingredient. It seemed to be in and in everything.
